Age: 17
Benjamin Banneker Academic High School
Grade: 12
Talent: Vocal

I have been a soloist in vocal performance for over seven years now. I have performed in various venues like the Newseum, the US Chamber of Commerce, the Ronald Reagan Building, and the Washington Convention Center for a number of very diverse events like the Huffington Inaugural Ball, National Crime Victims’ Week Kick-off Events, and the School Night Gala with John Legend. I have received no formal training, but I have been given great advice and guidance from my choir directors, past and present, that has strengthened my soprano voice and given it a unique and mature quality for my age. Last year I received the Award for Excellence in the Arts from the National Society of Arts and Letters, Washington Chapter which is a partner of the John F. Kennedy Center Performing Arts.

The accolades I have received and the high profile events where I have performed are not nearly as important to me as the feeling of confidence and accomplishment that I have acquired over the years as a performer. Enhancing my natural and unique abilities and honing my talents through active participation in the vocal community has enabled me to perfect my craft as a vocalist and as an all around artist. My passion lies with performing and recording music. I have had the unique privilege of recording a single entitled “Yes We Can” as a tribute to President Barack Obama and a Christmas album entitled “Merry Merry Christmas to You” with the Urban Nation H.I.P-H.O.P choir of which I am the president. I am a featured soloist on both CDs, and I also sing with the choir live. My roots are in church and I have been devoted to singing with my church’s choirs and appearing as a guest soloist at other churches and public/private venues for quite some time.

My experience as a performer has enabled me to use my leadership skills as the president of some amazing choirs. I am able to help direct and expand my personal knowledge of my craft while directing and molding other young artists. It also helps me to stand out among the many academically talented students at my school. Not many people can say that they have had some of the interesting experiences and fruitful opportunities that the performing arts have offered me.
